A strong before and after school program gives kids a safe, fun, and supportive space when they’re not in class. It’s especially helpful for working families and gives children a chance to grow socially, emotionally, and academically. I like to include a mix of activities—like homework help, creative projects, games, and time to talk and connect. Having structure with some flexibility helps keep them engaged and excited to come back. Programs like this really help kids feel like they belong and are cared for beyond the regular school day.
When children are engaged in meaningful activities, there’s less confusion, fewer behavioral issues, and more positive interactions with others. Staying busy with purpose also helps reduce unnecessary stress or miscommunication at home, and in some cases, can even lower the need for extra behavioral support.
